Saxophone Studies at the University of Oregon
The University of Oregon saxophone studio, under the direction of Idit Shner, is not just a place to learn the
saxophone: it is a dynamic learning environment which emphasizes a personal approach to the saxophone while constantly challenging students to seek the skills necessary to be a professional musician. Students from all programs, undergraduate and graduate alike, have access to lessons in classical and jazz styles. Aside from private lessons, students attend both of the weekly saxophone master classes presented by professor Shner. Saxophonists also gain invaluable performance experiences through their participation in the Oregon Wind Ensemble under the direction of Robert Ponto, the University Symphony under the direction of Dr. Wayne Bennett, and the award-winning Oregon Jazz Ensemble under the direction of nationally acclaimed composer and arranger Steve Owen. Students have benefited from performances and clinics by such world renowned saxophonists as Rich Perry, Dick Oatts, Otis Murphy, and John Sampen. Last year’s events included the world premiere of a concerto for soprano saxophone and wind ensemble, written by John Mackey and performed by professor Shner, as well as a master class and recital presented by James Umble and James Carter. The UO saxophone studio has several active saxophone quartets; they often embark on day-long “mini-tours” where they perform for and present clinics to high school students in the Eugene, Salem, and Portland areas. Recently, the Ross Saxophone Quartet was invited to perform in the prestigious Colman and Fischoff competitions.
